Who Are The Real Beneficiaries In Cash-For-Votes?

After Rajya Sabha MP and former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh and two other accused - former BJP MPs Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Singh Bhagora - have been arrested and sent to judicial custody till September 19, the Opposition has asked why the real beneficiaries of the cash-for-votes remain untouched.

The BJP and the Left demanded that the Manmohan Singh Government should come clean on just who was Amar Singh mediating on behalf of. The UPA government won that trust vote in July 2008, necessitated after the Left pulled out on the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Deal issue.

On the day of the trust vote, some BJP MPs showed currency notes, which they alleged was bribe money given to them by Amar Singh for voting in favour of the UPA. With Amar Singh and two BJP members are now in jail and Sudheendra Kulkarni has been accused as the main conspirator, what happens to the main beneficiary, the UPA?
BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said, "This is strange. The Congress is going after our MPs. Amar Singh has been arrested. Why there are no questions against the Congress?"

In its chargesheet, the Delhi Police has stated that it did question Sonia Gandhi's political secretary Ahmed Patel in the scam. But it did not find any evidence to support the allegations that it was he who was in touch with Amar Singh.

The question remains though, was Amar Singh, who was with the Samajwadi Party in 2008, dealing with BJP MPs totally out of his own free will?

The Samajwadi Party while maintaining a distance from Amar Singh did say that the Congress was making a scapegoat out of him.
The Left parties, bitterly opposed to the nuclear deal, were also questioning why the Delhi Police hasn't investigated the Congress properly.

CPM leader Gurudas Dasgupta said, "Congress is responsible, questions must be raised against them."
But Congress Spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "It's preposterous to even assume that the Congress is responsible for this."

The immediate fallout of this will be that there won't be any work in Parliament even in its last week. The BJP has already made up its mind to corner the Congress from Wednesday on a scam which LK Advani called the most immoral act ever committed by any government in the country.
