Dell Latitude 10, first Windows 8 tablet shows up

While Nokia shrugged aside reports about a Windows 8 tablet, calling it 'misconstrued,' a Windows 8 tablet unexpectedly emerged from Dell. As per reports by Neowin, the image (as seen below) is of the Dell Latitude 10 Windows 8 tablet. It's a 10-inch tablet with HD capacitive multi-touch screen with 1366 x 768 resolution.

The device is powered by Intel Clover Trail Atom Dual Core processor with 2GB RAM and graphics chipset from Intel. This Dell tablet wouldn't come across as the lightest and slimmest in the market, as it weighs 710 grams and measures 10 x 7 x 0.4-inches.

Dell, a renowned PC maker, hasn't been able to make a mark in the smartphone market. Its Streak could not make waves like Samsung's Galaxy Note, although both were intended to bridge the gap between tablets and smartphones.

PCWorld, however, points out that the spec sheet revealed about the first Windows 8 tablet is weak and underwhelming. It says that although the RAM and storage is higher than most tablets available, the Dell Latitude 10 is an Intel x86 device and not based on the ARM architecture.

It claims that several entry-level laptops have specs similar to the Dell Windows 8 tablet and cost just $300 or so. Reportedly, when someone buys a bargain laptop with hardware that just meets the minimum requirements to run Windows, performance is expected to suffer.

The question arises that will users pay premium to get the same in a tablet form? Windows 8 RT can't run traditional Windows software, and won’t be able to connect to a Windows network domain, so it doesn’t offer a very compelling proposition. Windows 8 tablets may gain traction only if they are priced cheaper than the iPad and same class of Android tablets.

The Dell Latitude 10's spec sheet displays 128GB SSD and an 8 megapixel camera and a 2 megapixel front facing camera.

Bump for Android now transfers photos directly to your PC

Bump is one really handy wireless data sharing software app, available for iOS and Android platforms. Now the creators of Bump have announced yet another nifty feature for the Bump Android app which allows direct photo transfer to PCs. Hence now you don't need to physically connect your Android smartphone or tablet to your PC to transfer images.

The earlier functionality Bump Android app allowed users to transfer contacts, photos and even app recommendations among devices which had Bump installed on them. All one has to do is just simply tap/bump two Android/iOS devices with Bump installed on them and the data will be moved between them.

But now, Bump developers have gone a step ahead and now allow transferring photos from the Android based devices to a desktop web browser directly. All one has to do is open the http://bu.mp website on your PC. Then open up the Bump on Android app, select the photos you wish to transfer and gently bump your phone on the keyboard's spacebar of PC. Currently this method works on Safari, Chrome and Firefox web browsers.

This is one novel way to transfer your photos from phone to the web directly. Get the Bump for Android app from the Google Play Store.

IIT, NIT panel to meet to decide on common entrance test for undergraduate technical courses

The joint council of the IITs and NITs will meet on Monday to discuss the government's move to hold a single entrance test for undergraduate technical courses. Sources say that the IITs, by and large, have opted to retain the existing format of JEE for 2013.

Ahead of Monday's crucial meeting, HRD Minister Kapil Sibal on Sunday met the IIT faculty federation and is understood to have sought to resolve differences arising out of the government's move to hold a single entrance test for undergraduate technical courses.

Most of the IIT senates and faculty federation are opposing admission to the undergraduate engineering programmes under the new format which will replace IIT-JEE and AIEEE.

The IIT council had met on May 12 during which it is believed to have insisted that the proposed single entrance test may be used as the screening test for admissions to the undergraduate program.

Under the proposed new format, which the Ministry proposes to implement from 2013 onwards, a ranking list will be prepared based on Class XII results with 40 per cent weightage to be given after normalisation of marks, 30 per cent to the main test and 30 per cent to the advanced test.

Sunday's meeting, which was also attended by some IIT directors, is understood to have also discussed the details about the advanced test.

IITs are insisting that only performance in the advanced test will be used to select and admit candidates to the undergraduate programs.

Sources also said there is no clear majority view emerging on whether to use board marks as cut-off or as part of the initial screening process.
