Death Sentence For Rajiv Gandhi Killers

The death row politics over Rajiv Gandhi's killers is heating up in Tamil Nadu. Almost 1000 Youth Congress workers are on a day-long fast in Chennai demanding that the death sentence for Rajiv Gandhi killers be carried out.

The Congress workers are protesting against the Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution calling for mercy for the assassins of the former prime minister. Already several members have courted arrest and have gathered at the Marina beach, demanding the hanging of the killers of Rajiv Gandhi.

Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution appealed to President Pratibha Patil that she reconsider her rejection of the mercy petitions of the three men - Murugan alias Sriharan, Santhan and Perarivalan alias Arivu - sentenced to death for conspiring in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination.

Murugan alias Sriharan, Santhan and Perarivalan alias Arivu were to be hanged on September 9 but the Madras High Court on August 30 stayed their hanging for eight weeks.

Their hanging was stayed after the trio, lodged in Vellore Jail, filed a petition on the grounds that the President of India took 11 years to reject their mercy pleas.

The former prime minister was assassinated by a team of Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorists on May 21, 1991 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu during the Lok Sabha election campaign.
