Even as the Samajwadi Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were planning to move a no-confidence motion against the Mayawati government, the BSP supremo played her cards carefully to leave the Opposition crying foul. She rejected the Opposition's charges of not following constitutional norms while getting the resolution passed, Mayawati said the people will respond in the Assembly elections.
"The resolution to divide the state has been passed. This is not a political move by BSP. We took this step after the Central Government did not take any action on our proposal. The Uttar Pradesh Assembly has fulfilled its duty with regards to splitting of Uttar Pradesh for the benefit of the state," said Mayawati while addressing a press conference to announce that the resolution to divide the state into Purvanchal (Eastern UP), Harit Pradesh (Western UP), Bundelkhand and Awadh Pradesh (Central UP) has been passed by the state Assembly.
"Uttar Pradesh has to be reorganised for the proper development of the state and people of Uttar Pradesh. We had to take up this matter after the Central Government did not fulfill its duties in this regard despite our reminders," she added.
Rubbishing the stand of the Samajwadi Party and the BJP that her government was in a minority as she had denied tickets to 40 MLAs and taken action against several others, Mayawati said that Opposition claims that the BSP does not hold majority was baseless.
"The Opposition's criticism of the BSP government is politically motivated and an attempt to weaken the BSP. Opposition does not want the split because they don't want Uttar Pradesh to progress," said Mayawati.
Targeting the Central Government over the Telangana statehood issue in Andhra Pradesh she also questioned why the Andhra Pradesh government was not being said to be in minority when several Congress MLAs had given their resignation to the Assembly Speaker.
She also accused the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government of not taking action in corruption cases.
"Many MPs of the Central Government are behind bars on corruption charges, but Congress and other parties never say that the Government is in a minority at the Centre," she said.
Denying accusations that her move to split the state was a political move and taken only to divert attention from the poor law and order and lack of development in the state, Mayawati said, "The people of Uttar Pradesh will reply back to the Central Government and Opposition parties in the coming Assembly elections."
She added that the UP Assembly had followed all constitutional process while passing the resolution.
But the Opposition called the the move to pass the resolution by a voice vote and then adjourn the Assembly as dictatorial. Senior Smajawadi Party leader Azam Khan compared Mayawati to Hitler.
"This is another example of Mayawati's dictatorial way of governing UP," said BJP leader Siddharth Nath Singh.
Lok Sabha MP from Khushi Nagar and Union Minister of State, Petroleum and Natural Gas and Corporate Affairs, RPN Singh called the passing of the resolution a shocking move.
"Mayawati has made democracy a mockery. She should have first faced the no-confidence motion.
Mayawati's move is shocking and it is a very sad day for people in UP," said Singh.
UP split: Who gains, who loses
Mayawati gains politically as her core constituency - Dalits - are evenly spread throughout the state.
Samajwadi Party's 8.7 per cent core Yadav vote is not uniform. One chunk is in Eastern UP and another in Etawah, Mainpuri and Etah belt.
RLD has been campaigning for Harit Pradesh in Western UP region. It is bound to gain there because of the dominant Jats.
The Congress like the BSP has influence in all regions, but it's far too thin, so no visible gain.
The BJP has influence in Eastern UP because of caste equation of Rajputs and Brahmins.
