Rahul attacks Maya, says UP not developing

Phulpur: Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Monday kickstarted his party's campaign for the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections addressing a rally from Phulpur, the constituency which voted Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to Lok Sabha.

He blew the bugle for the elections with rhetoric against state Chief Minister Mayawati on the birth anniversary of Pandit Nehru.

The Gandhi scion launched a tirade against the UP CM, playing the poor and the non-development card, citing the atrocities carried out on the agitating farmers of Bhatta Parsaul.

"In Bhatta Parsaul, farmers were being killed, land was taken away from them and women were being attacked. Who will answer for this?" he questioned.

Rahul lashed out at Mayawati also for the misuse of Central funds and the overall state of corruption that had seeped in into the state.

"We sent crores of rupees, but it disappeared. It went into making calendars and post cards. Workers weren't given jobs, machines. Who benefited? The BSP," he pointed.

He further said, "People could not eat, there was unemployment. The Centre gave MNREGA."

Invoking the spirit of change, the Congress general secretary said that it was time for Uttar Pradesh to welcome change, adding that he was ready to take the battle to Lucknow, the seatbed of power in UP.
