New Delhi: While two-year-old baby Falak continued to battle for her life at the AIIMS trauma centre on Monday, a woman claiming to be Falak's mother has come forward. Two more women, Kanta and Lakshmi, have been arrested in the case.
Nearly three weeks after Falak was brought to AIIMS in a battered state, the Delhi Police has traced Munni, the woman who claims to be Falak's biological mother and arrested two more women in connection with the case. While a DNA test still has to be conducted to verify Munni's claim, the police has said that she was tricked into leaving behind her three children.
DCP South Chaya Sharma said, "We were able to track down the mother of Falak from a village in Jhunjunu district in Rajasthan. We had formed 5 teams to trace down the family of Falak. Lakshmi was identified earlier. It was important for us to trace down the original biological parents. Kanta, Saroj and Lakshmi fooled her into getting married to a guy she knew nothing about."
Lakshmi and Kanta first tried to force Munni into flesh trade. When she refused, they convinced her to leave her husband's home in Muzaffarnagar and marry another man in Jhunjunu, Rajasthan. They told Munni they would look after her children and send them to her later. In September last year, Falak was handed over to Rajkumar and eventually left with the teenage girl who brought the baby to AIIMS.
The police is yet to arrest Rajkumar and another woman who cheated Munni, but the bigger worry is the fact that the whereabouts of her other two kids are not yet known.
Meanwhile, at the AIIMS Trauma Centre, doctors said that Falak's chances of survival were diminishing. Dr Deepak Agarwal said, "She has developed meningitis. This means that her brain is not responding to the new antibiotics."
The other major cause for concern is the fact that Falak has been back on ventilator since Saturday night. Doctors have said that if she stays on it longer, she could develop ventilatory associated pneumonia, which in turn could prove fatal.
As Falak battles for her life, finding her siblings will now be the focus of investigations. Police are yet to confirm whether this case is part of a bigger adoption racket.
