Maldives - Arrest warrant issued against ex-president Nasheed

New Delhi: As violence and protests spread across Maldives, a criminal court on Thursday issued an arrest warrant against former president Mohammed Nasheed.

First Secretary Consulate of Maldives Mohammed Farhad said that there have been violent incidents in the country unleashed by the former president's party.

The Maldivian government says that with the deployment of military and police we are making sure that situation is under control.

"The present government is making sure that law and order is under control. It was not a coup and the military leader is not in power now," said Farhad.

Farhad added that he is happy with India's response to the crisis in Maldives.

So far 18 police stations have been vandalized and several courts have been torched.

The situation is said to have spiraled out of control after Nasheed and his party took their demonstration to the streets and the police resorted to tear gas and baton charges.

Nasheed's Maldives Democratic Party also released pictures of two party members being seriously injured in the crackdown.

Nasheed claims he was forced to resign at gunpoint on Tuesday and now wants the country's Chief Justice to take action.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Ahmed Naseem has called for help from the US, UK and India.
