Maldives - Violence spreads as Nasheed protests

Male: The political transition may have appeared to be peaceful, but it hasn't lasted long in the island nation of Maldives.

Violence is spreading beyond the capital city of Male after further reports of military atrocities on political leaders.

The situation is said to have spiraled out of control after deposed president Mohammed Nasheed and his party took their demonstration to the streets and the police were forced to resort to tear gas and baton charges.

Nasheed's Maldives Democratic Party also released pictures of two party members being seriously injured in the crackdown.

Nasheed claims he was forced to resign at gunpoint on Tuesday and now wants the country's Chief Justice to take action.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Ahmed Naseem has called for help from the US, UK and India.
