Meeting with Sibal fruitful - Norwegian IT minister

New Delhi: Norwegian IT Minister Rigmor Aasrud said on Tuesday that she had a "constructive meeting with Mr Sibal". Aasrud was seeking protection for Norwegian telecom company Telenor's 3 billion dollar investment in the Indian telecom sector. Calling the discussion "fruitful", Aasrud said India must treat all companies fairly.

Meanwhile, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said he had heard Aasrud and assured her of all help.

"The Indian market has depth and lots of opportunity. I do not think that investment will not come in this sector. Time will tell this. This is a fast growing sector and the investors in this sector will surely be benefited."

He added, "This will be used as an opportunity to bring clarity in the sector and make clear, fair and transparent policies for a future. We will ensure that that the policies are implemented in fair and transparent manner. This is a robust sector."

Concerned over the impact of the recent Supreme Court verdict cancelling 122 2G licences, Aasrud had sought an appointment with Sibal to discuss the issue.

Telenor, a Norwegian company, holds the majority stake in Uninor, one of the affected parties of the Supreme Court verdict.

Telenor holds 67.25 per cent ownership share in Uninor, a joint venture with real estate major Unitech.
