PM seeks Attorney General's advice on SC's 2G order

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has reportedly asked for advice from Attorney General of India Goolam E Vahanvati on the Supreme Court's order cancelling 122 licences allotted by the Telecommunications Ministry during the tenure of former minister A Raja after January 10, 2008. Sources said that the Prime Minister wants to know whether a review petition is required to be filed in the case.

Singh has also asked Vahanvati to advice whether any action needs to be taken against anyone in the Prime Minister's Office in the 2G case. The Prime Minister has also sought a clarification on whether the existing practice in allotting spectrum should continue till a new law is framed.

In a big blow to the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government, the Supreme Court on February 2, 2012 scrapped all the 122 2G licenses issued during the tenure of Raja. Raja, accused of masterminding the 2G scam, has been arrested and is currently lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail.

Following the Supreme Court order, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) started the process of auction of 2G spectrum and issued a pre-consultation paper on the same seeking views of all stakeholders on February 3.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director AP Singh also met Central Vigilance Commissioner Pradeep Kumar to discuss further probe in the 2G spectrum allocation scam as instructed by the Supreme Court in its February 2 order.
