New Delhi: A suspect wanted in connection with the 2008 Ahmedabad blast case was killed in an encounter with the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Aurangabad on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Mohammed Abrar, a resident of Gulmohar Colony in Ahmedabad, police said.
Mohammad Abrar's name figured in the chargesheet of the Ahmedabad 2008 blast case and Gujarat Police say he was in touch with Indian Mujahideen operative Tauqeer along with another alleged criminal Abu Faisal, who is presently in the custody of Madhya Pradesh Police.
The encounter occurred near Uddhav Rao Patil Chowk in Himayat Bagh area of the town around 12.30 pm, sources said, adding two accomplices of Mohammed Abrar, identified as Mohammed Shabbir and Khaleel, were arrested in an injured condition after the encounter.
The three accused reportedly opened fire at the ATS team and injured one constable, Sheikh Arif. The ATS team then retaliated and killed Abrar. The other two were arrested. Police also recovered four 7.65mm revolvers and 90 rounds of bullets from the trio.
The trio was also wanted in two other cases in Madhya Pradesh. One of the two arrested was also involved in the murder of a BJP activist, said sources.
The serial blasts in Ahmedabad was carried out on July 26, 2008. The blasts occurred in close proximity to one another and beginning with Chief Minister Narendra Modi's constituency of Maninagar had shocked the country.
The blasts saw the targeting of hospitals where the injured victims of the citywide blasts were being brought, highlighting the considerable planning that went into it.
Of the 57 fatalities, 24 died in the blasts at the Government Civil Hospital where the injured in the serial blasts were being brought in. The 24 included doctors, nursing staff and even good Samaritans besides those injured in earlier blasts elsewhere.
