IITs, NITs, IIITs upset with common entrance test, to move HC

Strongly opposing the new format for admission to IITs and other central institutes from 2013, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) alumni association have decided to take the Union Human Resource Development(HRD) ministry to court. The association will be moving the Delhi High Court on Monday.

In a meeting on Friday, the alumni and faculty members of institutions like the IIT, NIT and IIIT have decided to file a PIL against the common engineering test - a decision which they claim the ministry took without consulting them.

Faculty members from IIT Kanpur are also planning to boycott the institute's convocation ceremony on Saturday as a mark of protest.

The association have also decided to form a lobby group and meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh objecting the move.

The association contended that HRD Minister Kapil Sibal did not keep his promise made to different stakeholders of not going ahead with the new format if there is even one dissent from the IIT senates.

While the new format seeks to give weightage to the class XII results under a two-tier format in deciding the merit list, the association underlined that the school marks should act as a cut off and not given any weightage.

The new format proposed for admission to the undergraduate programmes of IITs and other centrally funded institutes like NITs and IIITs will replace the IIT-JEE and AIEEE.
Students will sit for a main test and an advance test conducted on the same day.

For admission to all the centrally funded institutes, there would be 40 percentage weightage for performance in Class XII (after normalisation of marks), 30 per cent weightage to performance in main and 30 per cent in the advanced test.

In case of IITs, there would be a filtering process involved. The board results and the main test will be given 50 per cent weightage each. Only the top 50,000 students will be selected for the advance test after taking into account their performance in the board results and the main result.

The merit only in advanced examination will be considered for admission" to the IITs.
