Coldest Christmas in North India in 6 years

New Delhi: The national capital saw the coldest Christmas in six years with the minimum dropping to 2.9 degrees Celsius. The Met department has forecast ground frost in the capital's vicinity and intense morning fog to return later this week. According to the Met department, ground frost might occur over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, north Rajasthan and west Uttar Pradesh in the next two days.

Across North India, the cold wave has intensified and three more people have died in Uttar Pradesh, taking the overall death toll to 131.

Kanpur recorded a minimum of 2.5 degrees Celsius and Lucknow was close to 3 degrees. The mercury in Amritsar dipped to minus 0.6 degrees Celsius, while Hisar in Haryana recorded a minimum temperature of 0 degrees Celsius.

Biting cold winds also swept Chandigarh where the overnight temperature settled at 2.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

Manali recorded minus 0.8 degrees Celsius.

Kashmir also continued to reel under severe cold with Srinagar recording the coldest night of the season. Water supply lines remained frozen. The minimum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at minus 4.8 degrees Celsius and Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 9.8 degrees Celsius.
