New Delhi: Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid has defended the way the Government aggressively pushed for its own version of the Lokpal Bill after Congress President Sonia Gandhi gave a war call.
Speaking, Khurshid likened Sonia Gandhi to a General, calling the party foot soldiers.
Prabhu Chawla: Why has the government's language changed after Sonia Gandhi said the Congress would fight for the Lokpal Bill?
Salman Khurshid: Why Not?
Prabhu Chawla: Why wasn't the Government aggressive before? Earlier, only letters were sent to Team Anna.
Salman Khurshid: The soldiers always await the orders of the General. They act when the General says so.
Prabhu Chawla: So till then you kept compromising and talking behind closed doors?
Salman Khurshid: There were no compromises. There is nothing wrong in holding a dialogue. Even today, the Government is ready to talk to anyone. But talks must not be one-sided.
Sonia Gandhi's strong stand on Lokpal Bill
Last week, Sonia Gandhi came out strongly in defence of the UPA government and criticised the Opposition and Team Anna over the Lokpal and other bills.
"We are ready for the fight over the Lokpal and Women's Reservation Bill," Sonia said.
Taking a strong stand on the Lokpal Bill, she said, "The Lokpal Bill has been passed by the Cabinet. The Opposition will have lots of things to say, they should accept suggestions of the Government. Team Anna should also accept it."
"The Opposition is always trying to disrupt Parliament. The Food Security Bill was a dream, and they are trying to stop it," said the Congress President.
Criticising the Opposition, Sonia Gandhi further said, "The Opposition cannot reconcile to the fact that they have lost".
"Forces are trying to disrupt us from fulfilling our commitments," she added.
The government continues to stick to their stand after Sonia Gandhi took charge of the issue even as Anna Hazare and his team are struggling to get a venue for their agitation scheduled to start on December 27.
