New Delhi: Anna Hazare, the man who spearheaded the Lokpal campaign, has been hospitalised. He was rushed from his village Ralegan Siddhi to Sancheti hospital in Pune late Saturday night after complaining of chest congestion.
Anna was accompanied by his personal assistant and 2 others from Ralegan Siddhi at 10 PM. The 74-year-old was so weak that he had to be carried on a stretcher. Ill-health is what made Anna break his fast on December 28. His Team's core committee was to meet on Monday to discuss their next course of action but that meeting has now been postponed.
Dovtor Parag Sancheti, Chairman Sancheti Hospital, said, "Anna Hazare got admitted in Sancheti hospital about half an hour back. Dr K Sancheti had been to Ralegan Siddhi to visit him and he requested Anna Ji to come and get admitted because his cough was not coming under control and he was having a lot of chest infection. So, he has been admitted and we have sent him for blood test and ECG. No major problems but he requires rest. He has been given antibiotics and we are sure that his condition will stabilise in four to five days time."
The activist has been suffering from a viral infection since he undertook his fast on December 27, which was subsequently withdrawn the next day.
Hazare later went to his native village Ralegan Siddhi in Ahmednagar district for rest and recuperation.
Dr KH Sancheti, who examined Hazare, advised his hospitalisation for proper treatment and speedy recovery from the prolonged infection and fever.
The anti-graft crusader is expected to spend at least four days in the hospital, sources said.
"There is congestion in his (Hazare's) chest and he has strong cough. He can't remain in a single position for a minute. Therefore I've suggested to admit him in Pune," Dr Sancheti had said.
Hazare should get an X-ray done on his chest and undergo other medical investigations in the hospital, he had said.
According to Dr Sancheti, necessary precautions will have to be taken to ensure that the activist's condition did not develop into pneumonia.
Hazare's personal physician Dr Daulat Pote had said on Thursday that the Gandhian was still suffering from weakness owing to a viral infection and had been advised complete rest for at least four days.
Dr Mahendra Kavade, Chest Specialist, said, "Annaji was admitted late last night.
Annaji had chest congestion since a week. Today he is doing well, his conditions are stable now. He has Acute Bronchitis with secondary infection, due to which he was admitted last night. Today he is doing well and is stable. His WBC count and haemoglobin levels are normal now, though a little bit of deficiency in Calcium. He needs complete rest for atleast 4-5 days."
