Godhra/Ahmedabad: It's been 10 years since the Godhra train carnage and the Gujarat riots, a decade since many lives changed forever. Rajdeep Sardesai met two people separated by distance but united in grief.
In the Ahmedabad suburb of Vastral, the tears haven't really stopped flowing for 70-year-old Prafulla Soni. Soni lost her 23-year-old son Jassal and her husband Mukesh when the six coach of the Sabarmati express was set on fire.
Today, Soni lives alone in a two room house. Every February in particular, brings back the pain of the loss Soni suffered 10 years ago.
"Whenever February come memories of the carnage come back, I still remember what happened, how can I ever forget what happened," Soni said.
Over 150 kilometres away, in Godhra's signal Falia area another woman grieves. Naseem Medha's husband Siraj is facing the death penalty in the train burning case. Siraj is one of the 31 people convicted, but Naseem is unwilling to accept that her husband is guilty.
Prafulla Soni and Naseem Medha, the two women whose lives changed forever on February 27, 2002 are divided by religion but united in a sense by grief and tragedy.
