Damascus: The counting of votes for the Syrian referendum on a new Constitution amidst the escalating violence has begun and the results are expected on Monday.
At more than 14,000 polling stations all over Syria, 14 million eligible voters were out to approve or disapprove President Bashar Assad's draft Constitution proposals. It is claimed that if the proposal is approved, Syria will transform into a multiparty democracy, with direct elections for the president and guaranteed fundamental rights.
While, some people say they support Assad, others say the government has failed to clarify the independence of the Supreme Court. A clause which lays down Islamic law as the basis for all jurisprudence is controversial. Non Muslim minorities are reportedly worried over a clause which says the president must be a Muslim.
There are also question marks over how free, fair and secret the balloting has been since all voters are identified by numbers. There are concerns over the credibility of the vote in Homs and Idlib where thousands of people have been displaced by fighting.
