New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is all set to attend the Nuclear Security Summit in South Korea where he will present the safeguards taken by India against nuclear terrorism and concerns over safety.
Speaking ahead of his visit to South Korea, the Prime Minister said, "India is expanding its nuclear power programme to diversify its energy mix and enhance energy security. I will highlight the high priority we attach to nuclear security, safety and non-proliferation, and our impeccable record in this regard."
Pointing out that India is expanding its nuclear power programme to diversify its energy mix and enhance energy security, Singh said that in order to retain public support for harnessing the benefits of nuclear energy, "we must be able to assure them of the highest levels of nuclear security and safety."
This, he said, is "even more important" after the Fukushima accident in Japan last year.
Meanwhile, there are protests not just in India over the Kudankulam nuclear power plant, but also in Seoul against nuclear plant projects.
Dozens of protesters from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand gathered near the nuclear security summit venue.
Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the summit, US President Obama will be meeting Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. No word yet on whether the PM will meet the 2 leaders.
About 200 corporate leaders and energy experts are meeting over the next three days to discuss nuclear energy issues and atomic safety and security.
