Maharashtra | State to form tribal battalion to fight Naxals

Gadchiroli: Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil has said that the state will form a tribal battalion to counter the Naxal situation in Gadchiroli after 12 CRPF jawans were killed in an attack there on the March 27.

But with Naxals allegedly brutally killing anyone they suspect to be a police informer, in front of their families, the question is how many tribals will agree to support the government's initiative?

Gadchiroli, Maharashtra's Naxal hotbed, is also the state's most backward district. Dense jungles dot the landscape, villages have no road connectivity. The administration is virtually non-existent making it an ideal site for Naxal activities. Caught in the crossfire are tribal villagers like Surendra Karetti who was abducted and later killed by Naxals leaving behind his only daughter.

Surendra Karetti's daughter Sunetra Karetti said that there is no one to take care of her now.

Tribals allege Naxals kill many like Karetti in front of their families to strike fear. In the Dhanora village, Rayji was killed in the presence of his family by Naxals who suspected he was a police informer. His defenceless wife and teenaged son could do little to help him.

Rayji's son Shanker said, "The Naxals hit my father with a stick and then they shot him."

42 tribals from Gadchiroli have been killed by Naxals in the last year alone and the latest attack in Pustola that left 12 CRPF jawans dead has only added to the terror. RR Patil has said the state will form a tribal battalion to fight the Naxal menace but until development of the district is put in top gear, tribals will have little hope of a better future.
