Bangalore | Baby Afreen critical, may suffer brain damage, say doctors

Bangalore: Three-month-old Baby Afreen is still critical, doctors at the Vani Vilas hospital said on Tuesday. "Her brain cells could be damaged. She is having convulsions," the hospital said in a statement.

Baby Afreen was admitted to the paedeatric intensive care in the hospital on Sunday after allegedly being beaten up by her father Umar Farooq. She had cigarette burns on her head and a dislocated neck.

Afreen's mother, Reshma Bhanu said, "I saw that she was having fits on Friday morning and there were marks on Afreen's body. We took her to the hospital and after the scan, we realised that she was beaten up."

The Vani Vilas hospital said on Tuesday it could take up to three weeks before Afreen recovered.

It added, "In the night, the baby had blood mixed with her stools. She is still in ventilation. She had blood transfusion. We can have a full assessment only after she comes out of the ventilator."

Meanwhile, the Bangalore police has arrested the father. It said Umar repeatedly abused baby Afreen because he wanted a son instead. The police has booked him for domestic violence and attempt to murder, besides dowry harassment.

Nina P Nayak, Chairperson, Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child, said on Monday that Afreen's case was just the tip of the iceberg. "I am really concerned and Afreen's case is only the tip of the iceberg. Why is there no immediate response mechanism?" she asked.
