6 Kashmiri teachers learn new ways to teach

As part of an innovative teacher-training exchange programme, six teachers from Kashmir came all the way from Bandipore to Greater Noida's Step By Step school, looking for better opportunities and to give a better future to their students.

Bombarded with questions from the children, Javeera and Yasmina, two of the Kashmiri teachers, are the centre of attention at the Noida school. They all have great stories and some wonderful experiences to share with the children.

Says Shahzada, one of the six teachers, "Moving out from Kashmir for the first time, learning new methods of teaching... it was different.. so different for me."

When the summer sun becomes unbearable, the young Kashmiris find the ideal way to beat the heat. They play with the children in the splash pool in the school.

"We did fear the heat of the Delhi summer. But the weather too seems to have favoured us," says one of them.

As the weeklong programme comes to an end, the teachers return to Kashmir with some great memories and a special present.

The teachers from the Step By Step school will soon visit Kashmir, bringing with them books donated by the students to help set up a library in Kashmir. And while the six young teachers are excited about playing host, they are also keen to highlight the problems faced by the Kashmiri education system there.
