The grand old man of cinema, AK Hangal, dies at 95

Mumbai: The grand old man of cinema, veteran actor Avtar Kishen Hangal, passed away on Sunday in Mumbai. He was 95. Hangal, who was in a critical condition, was admitted to the Asha Parekh Hospital in Santacruz in suburban Mumbai on August 16 and kept in the ICU.

Hangal was admitted to the hospital after he had a fall on August 13 and had suffered a back injury. Hangal, who has acted in over 200 films, is best known for his roles in 'Namak Haram', 'Sholay', 'Shaukin' and 'Aaina'.

"My father died around 9 am. The cause of death is mainly age-related and his lungs had also become weak and collapsed," Hangal's son Vijay, 76, said. "He died following lung and kidney failure after he suffered a hip fracture," the actor's physician Koulsoum Hossein told the IANS.

"It is a great shock and loss to his family, admirers and the entire film fraternity," said a family member at the actor's Santacruz residence. He will be cremated on Sunday afternoon at the Vile Parle crematorium.

According to a hospital official, Hangal was on life-support systems for the past few days but did not respond to treatment.

He has been active in cinema since 1967 and played on-screen father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle to many top notch Bollywood actors, but two years ago Hangal - the famous 'Rahim Chacha' of 'Sholay' - was struggling for his life as his source of income had dried up and there was hardly any money for food or medicine. His economic condition had improved after his well wishers in the industry offered help.

He had recently made a guest appearance in the TV serial 'Madhubala', which was a tribute to 100 years of Indian cinema.
