Cong, DMK cozying up again?

DMK MP Kanimozhi met Congress President Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Saturday to thank her for supporting her in the Rajya Sabha elections from Tamil Nadu.

The Congress support had set off speculations that it was cosying up to former ally DMK. The Karunanidhi-led party had snapped ties with its nine-year-old ally in March on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.

Kanimozhi's re-election to the Upper House would have been doubtful had the Congress not promised the support, albeit reluctantly, of its 5 MLAs. Kanimozhi had earlier visited the Congress headquarters in Chennai to thank the state Congress chief.

Political observers say the Congress was not initially in favour of supporting Kanimozhi. But the DMK pulled the right strings. The DMK had pulled out its ministers from the Union Cabinet earlier in 2013 accusing the Congress of inaction over the Sri Lankan Tamils issue. But now the party says its relations with the Congress have always been cordial.
