MNREGA funds - Jairam writes to Maya, seeks probe

New Delhi: Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh has written another letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati demanding a probe into the misuse of MNREGA funds.

Jairam has demanded that the misuse of the fund be probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

In a 15-page letter, the rural development minister has given a blow-by-blow account of the MNREGA fund misuse in every district of the state.

The second letter by Ramesh comes days after Maywati wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh rubbishing all charges put by the rural development minister earlier.

In her letter to the Prime Minister, the UP chief minister had alleged that the allegations made by Ramesh were baseless and did not even have specific references about the misuse of the funds.

She had termed the letter by the minister as politically motivated.

The chief minister had, however, pointed that there had been complaints of poor quality of work in two districts, Gonda and Balrampur, but the investigations had already been ordered.

In her letter to the prime minister, Mayawati claimed action had already been taken wherever discrepancies were found. She further wrote that investigations had been ordered and recoveries also made.
