CWC meets, tells government to stick to firm decisions

The Congress Working Committee (CWC), in a crucial meeting held on Monday, asked the government to make firm decisions and stick to them, with the members asserting that they do not want the Congress to be seen as coming under pressure from allies and others.

According to sources, the party's highest decision making body also authorised party president Sonia Gandhi to choose the President and the Vice President.

The resolution to authorise the UPA chairperson to choose the President and the Vice President was moved by Union Finance Minister and veteran Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee, said sources.

Earlier Sonia Gandhi came out strongly in defence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, slamming the Opposition and Team Anna for attacking him and other ministers over corruption charges.

Besides, the Congress chief also pulled up party members for infighting.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also hit out at those making allegations against him saying 'canards' were being spread about the Congress and the government.

"Canards are being spread about us. Every day astronomical sums are being mentioned as black money which can be brought back, nothing can be further from truth. The truth is that the UPA is committed to fighting the menace of corruption," the Prime Minister said.

The government and party certainly put up a united front at the Congress Working Committee meet.
