West Bengal - 20 infants dead in 72 hours

Kolkata: Twenty infants have died at the Malada Medical College over the last 72 hours - 3 in the last 24 hours alone.

The hospital authorities say the babies were all malnourished, underweight and brought at the last stage. The authorities also maintain that the parents were not aware.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had blasted the media for spreading misinformation on Thursday and urged her party workers not to listen to the media.

Mamata reiterated that in eight months of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule, crib deaths came down by 2 per cent and said that the government will bring it down by 25 per cent.

Comparing to Left rule during which 40,000 kids died, the TMC supremo said that a large number of children are undernourished and that 8000 kids on an average are born at home.

The hospital had denied negligence on its part and said that the babies were admitted in aserious condition - some were suffering from birth asphyxia and pneumonia and others were born premature.
