J&K traffic policeman beaten for stopping minister's convoy

Srinagar: A case of brutality at the hands of a Jammu and Kashmir minister's guard has come to light. A traffic constable was brutally thrashed for stopping the politician's motorcade.

Sub Inspector Mohanlal, a traffic policeman was beaten up by fellow policemen for daring to stop the entourage of J&K's Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Taj Moihuddin. The minister's cavalcade had failed to stop at a red signal.

The incident happened allegedly after the traffic policeman stopped Moihuddin's convoy, from jumping a traffic signal at Lal Chowk in Srinagar.

When Mohanlal tried to stop them, two other policemen from Moihuddin's entourage tried to push him. Mohanlal, who was part of this team, tried to intervene and even he was beaten up. He was profusely bleeding and later taken to the hospital.

"I told him rules are same for everyone, even the Chief Minister stops here. I intervened when he began beating up my junior. After that another escort hit me on eye with the rifle butt," said Mohanlal.

However, the minister said that he was not aware of this incident and it might have taken place. But police sources said that the minister should not have acted as a mute spectator.

Meanwhile, sources that that attempt to murder charges have been leveled against the two cops who assaulted. They have been arrested and an FIR has been lodged in Kothibagh police station.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah later tweeted, "The cops who beat the traffic police officer have been arrested and booked. I have asked for the strongest possible action under law."
